Dr. Hongshuang Guo, a valued member of our Smart Photonic Materials (SPM) group, has been awarded a prestigious four-year Academy Research Fellowship by the Research Council of Finland. His project will be impremented at Tampere University from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2029.

Hongshuang’s project, STAR (Smart Biomedical PlaTforms Using Advanced Stimuli-Responsive Materials), will explore the development of intelligent biomedical platforms using stimuli-responsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). By combining dynamic bonding networks with surface biocompatibility enhancements, STAR aims to create innovative solutions such as shape-adaptive vascular sensors, pain-reducing sutures, and shape-memory stents. The project will address critical challenges in multifunctionality, durability, and biological integration—pushing the boundaries of what smart materials can achieve in biomedical applications.

STAR builds naturally on the foundation of Hongshuang’s current postdoctoral project, DELTA (Dynamic, Environment-Adaptive Light-Triggered Actuators), and reflects his inspiring long-term vision of designing adaptive materials that bridge molecular design with real-world impact.

Hongshuang earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Tianjin University in 2020 and joined our group at Tampere University under the guidance of Prof. Arri Priimägi. Since then, he has made remarkable contributions to our research community, earning a Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2022 and now this well-deserved Academy Fellowship.

The entire group is incredibly proud of Hongshuang and we warmly congratulate him on this achievement.
